The 2013 VITA season kicked off January 28, 2013 and will run through April 15, 2013. Free tax preparation and e-filing is available for individuals and families earning up to $55,000. 640 VITA volunteers have registered to date. Last year, the coalition received support from 450 active VITA volunteers. Individuals may still sign up to volunteer at 210-222-2975 or the United Way 2-1-1 call center.
SaveUSA will once again be offered at the following VITA sites: Guadalupe Community Center, Claude Black Community Center, St. Phillips College, YWCA, and Neighborhood Place. SaveUSA is a matched savings account for income eligible tax payers to enroll in during the tax preparation process. Participants will receive a 50 percent match, up to $500, if they deposit at least $200 of their tax refund into a SaveUSA account and maintain the initial deposit for one year.
Student Aid Saturdays will be co-located with VITA at St. Mary’s University, Palo Alto College, and University of the Incarnate Word to assist families in completing their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) forms. In 2012 VITA successfully filed 34,274 tax returns with the IRS, recovering over $63.6 million in refunds and eligible credits for San Antonio families. The City of San Antonio’s VITA program is the third largest in the country after New York and San Francisco.
