2015 VITA Season

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program provides free federal tax return preparation to San Antonio and Bexar County taxpayers earning $60,000 or less annually.  Over 30 organizations, including DHS, Catholic Charities, United Way, other non-profit organizations, as well as, financial institutions, businesses, local colleges and universities and the IRS work together to offer VITA services.

The program uses IRS trained and certified volunteers and staff, electronic filing, and a direct deposit option to ensure that taxpayers receive their refund in a timely manner, typically in 10 to 14 business days.  The availability and accessibility of VITA services assists San Antonio working families in claiming significant federal credits to which they are entitled including the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, Education Credits, and Child Care Tax Credit.

This year, from January 20 through April 15, the coalition operated 20 VITA sites across the community – the Department of Human Services operated 16 of these sites and a mobile team.  As of April 27, VITA served 35,709 taxpayers, compared to 32,379 returns completed at this time last year, returning more than $59 million in total refunds and approximately $34 million in Earned Income Tax Credits to the community

VITA also saved our hard working taxpayers an estimated $8 million in tax preparation fees. This represents substantial savings for VITA families who have an average annual income of $21,000.  VITA will continue to operate two year-round tax clinics at the Frank Garrett Center, 1226 N. W. 18th Street and the Guadalupe Community Center, 1801 W. Cesar Chavez Blvd.
